About Rumpke Waste & Recycling
Rumpke Waste & Recycling has been committed to keeping neighborhoods and businesses clean and green since 1932 by providing environmentally friendly waste disposal solutions and recycling options. Headquartered in Colerain Township, Ohio, just outside of Cincinnati, Rumpke is one of the nation’s largest privately owned residential and commercial waste and recycling firms, providing service to areas of Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and West Virginia.
The Challenge
Rumpke required a sandbox environment to do extensive testing while building and developing their new environment. The challenge is to stand up an environment with a short turn-around time with flexible cost-effective billing.
Why Amazon Web Services?
After extensive evaluation of their current environment and reviewing various options Rumpke decided to build their SAP Sandbox environment on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud. They engaged AWS Consulting Partner ETZ GLOBAL.
We required a Sandbox environment that was quick and simple to build, while at the same time be cost-effective. It was also important that tests were repeatable and the environment could be reverted quickly and easily. AWS was the premium public cloud provider that ticked all the boxes in regards to delivering a fast, cost-effective and secure environment.

The important aspect that was needed for Rumpke was that they wanted an environment where they can do testing of different business processes without affecting their current system or their in-flight developments. If they hit any problems or wanted to test a different direction they want a quick turn-around to recreate or fail back the environment to previous point in their development cycle.
Herman van Aswegen, CEO of ETZ GLOBAL, about the approach selected for Rumpke.
ETZ GLOBAL presented a design that was flexible and cost-effective that could allow for multiple tests being able to be run in short time allowing the development team to move testing forward quicker and play around with different scenarios to multiple ideas. This led to less down time for the development team and better brain-storming opportunities for the business team.
The Rumpke SAP environment runs on on-demand Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances leveraging Amazon Machine Images (AMI) and snapshots for quick build turn-arounds. Rumpke uses multiple Availability Zones across the AWS Ohio region and the Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) design allows for easy scaling as needed.
AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) allows control of user access to AWS resources. The infrastructure is monitored through Amazon CloudWatch, while AWS CloudTrail records changes across services.
AWS architecture allows us to easily test functionality and performance of new developments and also play with various scenarios without affecting the live environments or in-flight developments. ETZ Global was the right partner to take charge of the build and to take the lead in working with our team to handle the copy of the our production environment and working around challenges and providing guidance and solutions to deliver the Sandbox environment in timely and cost-effective manner. It was clear that their experience resulted in a project that delivered on their promises within budget and time.
Dan Labin, IT Manager at Rumpke, about their overall experience.

The Benefits
By using AWS for their own SAP landscape Rumpke justified that it could flexibly and rapidly procure IT infrastructure while meeting its business objectives. In addition, there were major cost benefits that resulted from the build.
The time needed to provision a new environment was reduced from weeks, to less than an hour.
Testing the effect of any Support Package or code changes is so easy. Just spin up multiple copies from the same AMI image make the changes and see the effect. Then shut them down again.
Overall, Rumpke is extremely pleased with the flexibility, cost-effectiveness, performance, and security of the AWS infrastructure.
